The Downy is a backyard favorite and is America’s smallest species of woodpecker. They are friendly little birds that enjoy being around people.
Since Downys tend to use nest boxes in the winter as roosts to escape the cold, you may consider putting up a house in the fall. Their habitat is predominantly open woodlands (specifically deciduous trees) and along streams. They can also be found in created habitats like orchards, parks, suburbs, and nested along fencerows.
This house comes standard with slate squirrel guard and wood chips.
